More than Sea, Sand and fun...A cultural experience

Whether you are here for business or fun, Virgin Gorda has something for everyone, an island with rich history and hidden adventures.

History

Out from the volcano she rose, sitting strategically at 18 degrees north and 64 degrees west; displaying herself as a Fat Virgin - commonly known. This is Virgin Gorda, from whence she came. The written history of Virgin Gorda begins with the account of the Taino people ca. 500 - 1500 BC.

While remnants of the  1492 world colonisation still remain, there are vivid reminders of the Taino people in Virgin Gorda. Before tourism became the main focus, Virgin Gordians lived a nomad life of cultivation living in wooden houses with four-hip roofs; keeping in line with the Taino architecture. There are a few around the island and to date, whelks and clams are still a delicacy.

Over the years Virgin Gorda has continued to contribute significantly to the History of the Virgin Islands. Spanish Town was the first capital. The Flax family produced honey and straw hats; now a young Flax generation (Ariq Flax) has joined forces to keep the honey industry alive. Hailing from North Sound, are the tales of some of the best sea-faring men.

The tourism industry was birthed in Virgin Gorda in 1964 from one resort to becoming one of the capital cities for tourism to The Millionaire's Playground. No matter what, no matter whom, the shores of Virgin Gorda continues to welcome all like a friendly Taino!
